Among other things, we had an enthusiastic discussion about various matters at the meeting last week. Discussion was held on the upcoming Voluntary Assisted Dying workshop on 17th September with members putting their hands up for various tasks to assist making the night a success.
I'm looking forward to seeing which TED speaker Geoff has organised for us for this week's meeting.
Next week, PDG and DGN Jodie Sparks will join us to update members on the Rotary Foundation. Anyone who has attended any training delivered by Jodie, knows she is an entetaining and enthusiastic speaker; one who is passionate about the Foundation.

TREEMISSION PLANTING

On Saturday morning, President David, Jane and Judy joined members from at least 7 other clubs to plant 3,000 seedlings along the Wungong River off McNeil Rd, Champion Lakes.
Organised through RC of Mill Point, Josh from South East Regional Centre for Landcare (SERCUL) gave us an overview of the benefits of the plantings and instructed us in how to plant the wet and dry land seedlings.
The South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) was formed in 2003 as an independent Natural Resource Management body in Perth, Western Australia. SERCUL brings together the community, business and government to develop and implement projects that improve the health of our waterways and other ecosystems.
One of five sub-regional bodies, the area SERCUL covers takes in Dyarguu (the Canning River), the Southern Wungong River and their tributaries and parts of Derbarl Yaragan (the Swan River).
It was a perfect morning for planting with the sun shining and no breeze. It took the group about 2 hours to plant the 3,000 seedings...time enjoyed planting and chatting with members of other Rotary clubs. A good morning's work.
Wungong River Bioretention Basin (update from SERCUL website)
The project aimed to reduce the quantity of nitrogen entering the Wungong River redirecting stormwater through a treatment system to reduce contaminants and increase dissolved oxygen levels. The Wungong River forms part of the Southern River Catchment in the metro area of Perth. The Wungong River project site extends approximately 200m north of Lake Road along the east bank of the Wungong River.
This site provided an opportunity to convert a closed piped system into an open system that mimics a more natural flow path for surface water across the site. The modifications created habitat for native fauna and provided treatment to improve surface water quality through biofiltration. A new manhole fitted with a diversion baffle directs low flows into a vegetated surface flow wetland constructed on the eastern floodplain of the Wungong River. The water passes through the open wetland and then through a gated weir into a vegetated subsurface flow wetland to create anaerobic conditions suitable for denitrification.
The planting of the wet and dry land seedings assist in the success of this project.

TREEMISSION - ANOTHER OPTIONAL EVENT
The RC of Mill Point is promoting another tree planting opportunity on the 14 August (this will probably be the last for this season).
This activity is being organized by the Coordinator of the Friends of Sorrento Beach and Marmion Foreshore and it will be undertaken at Sorrento Beach near Hillary's Boat Harbour. The task is planting on the recently fenced dunes that have been significantly degraded by uncontrolled access.
The planting day (14 August) has been set for a Thursday morning as that is when the local "Friends" volunteer group usually get together so there should be some people from that group available. We need to determine over the next few weeks how many planters we can round up to see whether we have enough to plant around 1000 seedlings on the dunes. The Coordinator needs to confirm that we have the people to do the planting at which time the local Shire Council will source the plants.
